Back in 2012 when I found out I was pregnant with my first child, I changed my entire life. I remember food shopping in Wholefoods and looking at some of the lotions and a lady came up to me and said something along the lines of “did you know that what you put on your skin is absorbed into the blood stream in less than 30 seconds.” From that moment I looked at everything I was eating and using as far as beauty and personal care with an entirely different mindset. I went home and couldn’t believe the amount of “crap” to put it kindly in all of the products I was using. Somewhere along the way I decided to make my own homemade body butter. I had moved to London for the year, I had no friends or family and it was mid winter there. All I did was eat really healthy food (lol, I gained 70lbs) and read a ton of books and online information. I became obsessed with using the most natural products I could, even if that meant I had to make them myself.
Many will argue that it comes down to genetics, and while I agree, I do still think that it is important to use lotions and butter to keep your skin moisturized and that it does help in preventing dry itchy skin, and possibly stretch marks as well.
So here is what I did. I went to amazon and ordered a bunch of all natural and raw butter, Organic if available.
Homemade Butter
-Raw cocoa butter
-Coconut oil
-Mango Butter
-Aloe Butter
-Shea Butter
As for measurements, I kind of just winged it. I made a huge supply. If you want a smaller batch, try these measurements below
1 cup Shea butter
1/4 cup cocoa butter
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup mango butter
1/2 cup aloe butter
You can also add some essential oils to make it scented. (just double check which ones are safe for pregnancy).
My two favorite essential oil companies are Doterra and Young Living.
I put some of the hard butter in a double boiler (which you can also find on amazon) to soften them up. Once they just about melted, I let them cool and then moved the contents into a mixing bowl and into the fridge. I let it sit until it became opaque in color, but not quite solid in form.
Then, mixed them all together with my mixer. This would be the time to add any essential oils you would like. Mixing the oils makes it turn to a “whipped” body butter texture and should keep its consistency in room temperature. When cold, the natural butter will harden but when warm, it becomes soft and sometimes even back into an oil form.
Storage:
I used an old glass Jam jar for Homemade Butter and kept it by my bedside and applied day and night. You can also find bulk mason jars in a number of shapes and sizes on amazon as well.
I truly believe that this helped in preventing stretch marks from appearing on my body. From a 23″ waist to a 45″+ waist I have not 1 stretch mark.
I do have a few on my butt however, and I believe it’s because I forgot to butter my booty while doing my belly, boobs, and hips.
5 years later, I still get emails and messages everyday asking for the recipe I made. I hope you enjoy making it for yourself just as much as I did <3
